Frankie Valli was an incredible singer with multiple hits throughout his illustrious career.  In fact, he is still performing with a new, younger backup group.  If you get a chance to see him, don’t miss it.  He is still great at age eighty-three, and while he is performing, you truly “can’t take your eyes off of ‘him’.”

With all those years of performing with the other “Seasons” who were terrific in their own way, can anyone name them?  Just like Gladys Knight and the Pips or Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, who were these other, gifted performers? It is completely understandable that the star is showcased, and that is the way it must be.

Now to the point of this blog.  Winter is the dominant season for all of us who live in the North.  We continue to delude ourselves that, perhaps, the seasons are equally divided and packaged neatly into three months of each. Ha! Truth be told, winter begins not on the prescribed winter solstice of December 21st but around Thanksgiving somewhere around November 21st.  Then, hope springs eternal, pardon the pun, as we await the official beginning of spring, March 20th. Ha! Ha! To be certain that your Easter bonnet and matching shoes don’t get ruined by slush and the salt that melts the snow, pray that Easter comes later in April and not earlier. Have you ever gone to the opening game of a Major League baseball game in early April? Long underwear is usually needed.

Therefore, here is the breakdown of the seasons in Michigan:

  • Winter: 5 months
  • Spring: 2 months
  • Summer: 2½ months
  • Fall: 2½ months

In conclusion, Frankie Valli certainly embodies the season of winter as he dominates his group just as winter dominates the climate in Michigan. His hit song “December ‘63” just illustrates the importance of him to his iconic group, The Four Seasons. The title could never have been “July ’63, could it? Not in the North.

P.S. Although the other member of the Seasons changed over the years (go figure that seasons change), the first members were:

  • Bob Gaudio, born Nov. 17 (fall)
  • Tommy DeVito, born June 19 (spring)
  • Nick Massi, born Sept. 19 (summer)

Somewhat disappointed, I had hoped that Frankie Valli would have been born in the winter – no dice, May 3 (spring). So, hunker down all you Northerners; spring will be here.
